+Beth Israel Synagogue - Located at 3001 West Street, corner of Virginia Avenue, in Weirton

+Established in 1916 as an Orthodox Congregation. The synagogue building built in 1927.

+The Congregation closed in the late 1990's due to a severe decline in the Jewish population.

+The synagogue building was sold and later a portion partially collapsed and was torn down.

+Some Presidents of Beth Israel were: J. Levy (1916); Samuel Geffner; Frank Linkoff; Max Kuntz

+Some Rabbis that served Beth Israel were: Nandoe Martin; Jacob Perlman; I Levendorf

+Union Cemetery - Steubenville, Ohio - Section for Weirton Jewish Community

+Beth Israel Ladies Auxiliary organized in 1919 with Mrs. I Levendorf as the first President. Later changed to "Beth Israel Sisterhood".

+Hadassah Chapter, organized in 1931 with Mr. Harry Seigel as the first President

+B’nai B’rith Lodge No. 1658, organized in 1946 with A.J. Rosenshine serving as the first President.

+Zionist Organization, formed in 1925 with Dr. Simon Sacks as the first President.

+Milton J. Weinberg Theater - Weir High School, named in 1989 for Mr. Weinberg, a teacher and performing arts advocate at the school and in the community.

Kaufman's Hardware Store - located on Pennsylvania Avenue in Weirton Heights, owned and operated by William Kaufman.

Kempler’s  Bakery & Deli Mart - located at the corner of Virginia Ave. & Orchard St. Morris Kempler, Ben Kempler and Herman Goldman were partners.

Knell's Produce - located on the Triangle in Upper Weirton. Owned and operated by Max Knell.

Kramer's ? Men's Shop - Main St. & Taylor Ave. Established by Louis Friedman and later owned by Harry Kramer

Kuntz's Market - located on South Main Street. owned and operated by Max Kuntz.

Levendorf Insurance - located at Taylor Ave. & main St. Owned by Louis Levendorf and later his son, Marvin Levendorf.

Ralph Nach Feed Store - (still existing 2005) on corner Ave. A & Main Street, upper Weirton

Nathanson's Pharmacy - Originally located in the 1700 block of Main St., later moved to Marland Heights. Owned & operated by Harry Nathanson.

P & L Hardware - Established by Phillip Nach and Louis Elfont. Louis later bought out Phillip Nach.

Perr's Men's Store - owned and operated by Louis Perr. After his death the store was purchased by Marty Izenson.

Pitler's Market - located in Weirton Heights. Begun by Harry Pitler. He was killed in an auto accident and the store was purchased by Mickey Recht.

Plevin’s Grocery Store - small "Mom & Pop" grocery later purchased by the Gross Family, later run by son, Ron Gross

Rabinovitz Clothing Store - run by two brothers - Main Street between Avenues E & F

Sable Wholesale Produce Company - 3424 West Street. Owned and operated by Louis Sable, partner Henry Goldstein.

Al Shaw Jewelers - located in the 3000 block of Main Street. Owned and operated by Al Shaw and son Lennie Shaw

Shipper's Market - located at the corner of Lee Ave. & Main St. Owned and operated by Herman Schipper.
Simon’s Furniture - Simon’s Carpet Town - Located on South Main St., owned & operated by Myron Chijner. Established about 1950 by Morris & Sam Chijner and still in business under the same family.

The Smart Shop (for women) - owned and operated by Sam & Celia Weinberg, located next to The Men’s Shop

Temeles Clothing Store - located in upper Weirton, owned and operated by Sam Temeles

Variety Store - located on Main Street. Owned and operated by Reuben Wershbole. Later owned & operated by Wershbole's son-in-law, Julius Luria.

Variety & Food Wholesaler - owned and operated by Harry Caplan and Ben Dovid, not related to Harry Caplan of Caplan's Market
Wayside Furniture - located in the "Cove"

Weirton Market - located on the Triangle. Established by Phillip Nach and later owned by Al Recht.

Weinberg Grocery - Owned and operated by Louis Weinberg. Located where the present library is found.
Weinberg Brothers Clothing Store - owned and operated by Joseph and Fanny Weinberg & brother Sam Weinberg & wife, Celia. Originally located at 1618-22 Main Street, but later moved to the "Cove"

Weinberg's Smart Shop - located at 3128-32 Main Street, owned and operated by Sam & Mel Weinberg

Weisberger Men’s Store – located on Main Street. Maurice Weisberger was one of the two
brothers who ran the store. They also had shops in Follansbee, Brooke Co., West Virginia, and Mingo Junction, Jefferson Co., Ohio

Zeff's Market - located on Weir Avenue. Owned and operated by William Zeff

Jewish Families in Weirton and Surrounding Communities

 

The first Jewish settlers in the town were Samuel Geffner, Baer Rabinovitz and Ralph Nach in 1909.
